Moore & Giles uses Vegetable Tanning which is the oldest method of tanning. It utilizes vegetable tannins and extracts from trees and plants for use in the tanning process.  Today, vegetable tanned leather is still utilized by boot and saddle makers.   Think about the different ways you can use luxury leather from More & Giles trade only showroom at the Design Center at the Chicago Merchandise Mart. Glen, what was your client looking for in the design of this home?   The owner has had a home on this site for many years, but the family had outgrown it. It was demolished, and this house was built in its place. The client gave us and the architect, Mike Abraham, the task of making this new, larger home feel like it was the next expansion of several phases over the years.  Tell us more about the materials you chose for this project.  We use stone and wood so that it would seem that the sections of the house had been added onto over the years. Rusticated Stone and reclaimed wood – some of it from the original house – helped achieve this result.  We incorporated a composition of granite, quartz, limestone of different types and areas of origin, concrete and even river stone.  The furnishings played a big role. While the goal of the architectural design was to make it appear the house was of vintage age, we wanted the furnishings to reflect more of an up-to-date feeling yet still play homage to the comforts of tradition.  The color palette reflects the exterior materials. There was a concentrated effort made to bring the outside into the interior of the house.   Reclaimed wooden beams and exposed stone walls gave the impression this newly built vacation home on Geneva Lake is centuries old. Interior designer Glen Lusby complemented these architectural materials with a trio of lounge chairs from the deAurora showroom Covered in a Donghia  matelasse, all found at the Design Center in the World Famous Chicago Merchandise Mart.

In the main house, reclaimed wood beams, exposed stone walls, fireplaces and wide thresholds separating the hardwood floors give the impression that the home was cobbled together over the years, one addition at each time. The truth, it was built assembly-line style in 3 stages. After the foundation was poured there were multiple trades on site at all times, moving from left to right.   The owners tap Chicago-based designer Glen Lusby, of Glen Lusby Interiors, to serve as the unofficial liaison on between the various craftspeople.” We’ve been working with Glen for years and years, he’s a gifted gentleman,” the client explains. Inspired by the view, Glen blanketed the interiors in a pallet of ivories and gray-blues, which repeats throughout the house.   “The major theme is comfort and softness,”Lusby explains.” There’s nothing stark about this house, and no hard edges.”

Each piece of upholstered furniture created at EF+LM incorporates the tried & true construction method of eight-way hand tying. This process allows for hardened steel coil springs to be held in place by an intricate web of support wires, helical springs and eight-way hand ties which are secured to the wood frame. It’s labor-intensive, creating a more comfortable, more durable piece of furniture and it’s the right way to build upholstered furniture.

At EF+LM they match each roll of fabric with your order, insure adequate yardage, and inspect every inch of the fabric for flaws or defects. Their technicians tag any defects in the fabric so the cutters can work around them. A defect can include “picks”, light and dark areas, or anything visually or physically wrong. They also check the grain of all textiles to make sure they are straight and comparable to the high standard they uphold.

At EF+LM hand craftsmanship is combined with the latest in modern technology and materials to create the highest quality furniture in the world. Each design is built to order one at a time in a collaborative environment. Engineers, craftsmen, finishing and quality control descend on case piece refining the details for aesthetics and durability. Most pieces are created by rough cutting solid hardwoods. “Interior design is a process.  And a collaboration with you.  Because to you it is more than a project – it’s your home or office. We create environments designed to reflect and express the individual tastes of the clients who live and work in those spaces. My job is to guide you from the beginning ideas and concepts to the finished rooms, and have you enjoy every step of the way”.                                                                          

Originally from the Kansas City Missouri area I started my college education at the University of Northern Colorado and completed my schooling at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, where I received a B.A. in Art History. It was during this time that I decided to pursue my interest in art and interior design.

I began my work in the interior design field with a firm in Kansas City. My initial duties required me to make trips to Chicago for selections and orders. After a short time I established an office for the firm in Chicago.

I chose to stay in Chicago and took a position with a design firm on the North Shore. Ultimately I joined Greg Stratman Interiors at their LaSalle Street offices. When Stratman closed it’s doors in 1990 I became a licensed Interior Designer and went into business on my own.  I have come to understand how to put my personal taste aside and work to the particular desires of each individual client by using diverse styles of furniture, textiles, textures, and color.  It is true that my personal design style leans toward Art Deco and 30’s modernism. However, this never colors the work I do for my clients because of my diverse education and, having the good fortune to work with seasoned professionals throughout my career.

At Glen Lusby Interiors our goal with every client is to work with them; not for them.  We feel this makes the design process go more smoothly and allows our client  to have fun with the project. We understand it’s important for the you to enjoy the working relationship and the time invested, because the finished product is going to be with them for a long time. This approach to the design process, along with our technical skills, accounts for the longevity of many of our clients, some of whom we have worked with for over 20 years.  We would like to be your trusted consultant when you have questions relating to your home or place of business.
